For Teachers who wish to help their students understand the subject of “Freedom of Conscience” from the Scriptures.

Discuss how Christ and his Apostles handled Freedom of Conscience and Christian Liberty based on statements in the following passages: Luke 4:18; Luke 9:51-55; I Corinthians 8: 1-13 1 Corinthians 10: 23-11:1; Galatians 5: 1 Romans 14: 1-23

Compare and contrast Christ’s attitude toward coercion and preaching the Gospel based on his words and those of his disciples in Mt. 28:16-20; John 3:16 with St. Augustine’s stated policy based on Luke 14:23. The concept of Christian coercion began with Augustine in the 5th century based on his interpretation of the word “compel” found in Luke 14:23 RSV. Here is his statement. “It is indeed better that man should be brought to serve God by instruction than by fear or punishment, or by pain, but because the former means are better the latter must not therefore be neglected”.

Considering the topics above, compare and contrast what happened between the serpent and Eve with what is going on in Revelation chapters 13, 14 & 18 concerning deception and coercion. Loosely paraphrasing, the serpent said, “Eve wouldn’t you like to be like God?” The book of Revelation describes the role, purpose and strategy of the Lamb-like beast. What is the linkage?

How do I not fall into the deceptive and destructive trap(s) of coercion of which Satan is constructing for the world implied by Revelation 13 and as evidenced by the polarization-coercive strategies exhibited by current economic, political, social and religious segments of society today?
